Are you an indie author? Have you searched through all the other editor’s sites, swooned at what all their expertise could do for your manuscript, only to curl beneath your desk at the costs involved?
You’re not alone.
I’ve been there; jaw on the floor staring at the four-figure sum for copy editing, and wondering how I’d magic that up. I didn’t have an answer. The scary money involved led me to shelve my novel because I couldn’t afford the service, and I certainly couldn’t afford to put out substandard work for my readers.
My solution was to learn the ropes (by studying for an Editing and Proofreading Diploma which I earned with Distinction) and offer an affordable service to authors like you and me. Though, I can’t offer these prices for too long; else I’d never have time for my writing.
What my copy editing service covers is a line-by-line edit (inline comments) for the following:
- Improving reader experience
- Review and correction of spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word choice
- A character sheet (name spellings, eye color, hair color, backstory, and so forth)
- Timeline of your story
- Editing for consistency of facts and style
- A check for clarity, flow, accuracy, and logic at paragraph and sentence level
- Highlighting of any copyrighted material that may need permissions
The aim is to maintain your original meaning and message while keeping your voice intact.
2018 Rate: $0.005 per word (an 80,000-word manuscript would cost $400). I invoice through Paypal, 50% at the time of booking and 50% due at completion.
I’ll keep you informed of my progress weekly (if I’m working on a full manuscript), or every 10,000 words (if working on a shorter document).
File formats accepted: Word, Pages, Scrivener, and Google Docs. Please ensure you’ve enabled me to edit your file, and that you keep a backup.
When the work is complete, I’ll save the file with the track changes for you to see what’s changed. I also deliver a second copy for you with all changes accepted.

So, what doesn’t come under copy editing?
Looking at story structure, looking for plot holes, character development, etc. Those come under developmental editing, a service I don’t currently offer. I do lightly cover those areas in my beta reading service—though not in great detail: I highlight what’s missing, and whether you’re hitting the mark or not.
