Proofreading

Now that you’ve finished your masterpiece, and edited it to within an inch of its life, it’s time to get that bad boy proofread.

Proofreading is your final quality check before uploading your book to the various outlets. The proofing happens after you’ve worked with an editor to clean up your prose, fill in those plot holes you missed, and you’ve polished your story into awesomeness. However, that awesomeness sometimes contains misused words like bear when you meant bare. Or, mistyped words like fro instead of for. Unfortunately spellcheck, and sometimes Grammarly, don’t see those as errors. That’s where the eagle eyes of a proofreader come in.

With this service, I read every single word of your manuscript once on screen, and then again out loud to catch those tricky little errors that sneak by the eye.

I correct for the following errors:

  • Spelling
  • Punctuation (such as comma splices, hyphenation, em-dashes, en-dashes)
  • Duplication
  • Typos
  • Extra spaces/missing spaces
  • Common homophones (affect, effect; canvas, canvass; pedal, peddle, and so forth)

I deliver two copies of your file, one with track changes accepted, the other with track changes on, but not accepted.

Before proofreading takes place, your manuscript should be complete and fully edited, as in it’s ready to be published and requires only a trained set of eyes to pick up errors.

2018 Rate: $0.0033 per word (an 80,000-word manuscript would cost $264). I invoice through Paypal, 50% at the time of booking and 50% due at completion.

File formats accepted: Word, Pages, Scrivener, and Google Docs. Please ensure you’ve enabled me to edit your file, and that you keep a backup.

It’s important to know that proofreading does not cover correction of grammar, style, syntax, flow; those tasks fall under copy editing.
